Fatal Liaison

Taking Risks

The 26-year-old sportsman has a history of risk taking and also, reportedly, of violence. Another more complex character has been evident behind his against-all-odds exterior. Friends had warned that his risk-taking and sleeplessness had seemed out of control.

Vanderbijlpark police investigated a case of reckless and negligent driving against athlete Oscar Pistorius after a boating accident on the Vaal River. Even though the police had found empty bottles of alcohol on the boat, his blood wasn’t tested for alcohol use.
Vanderbijlpark police investigated a case of reckless and negligent driving against athlete Oscar Pistorius after a boating accident on the Vaal River. Even though the police had found empty bottles of alcohol on the boat, his blood wasn’t tested for alcohol use.

In 2009 he was lucky to survive after crashing his speedboat. A motorbike accident left one of his famed prosthetics hanging from a barbed wire.

Pistorius also crashed his power boat into a submerged pier in 2008, breaking two ribs, his jaw and an eye socket, and had to have 172 stitches. ‘The boat’s gone, too,’ he adds, smiling and looking sheepish.

‘We don’t do that stuff any more. It was quite difficult to get that out of my system. I miss that quite a bit.”

‘There will be a time for that in the future but, right now, I would be quite upset if I got injured. There must be other ways I can unwind. It’s a small sacrifice.’

He reads, paints, and plays ‘the odd nine holes of golf’ instead, but you feel it has been very difficult, letting go of the pursuit of going dizzyingly, dangerously fast.

Commercial Rewards

The commercial rewards for his global profile were considerable – he earned sponsorship deals said to be worth $2m a year with corporate partners from Nike to BT, Oakley and even the French fashion house Thierry Mugler.

Billboard-Oscar-webWhile sponsors rushed to tear down billboards bearing his image and broadcasters dropped him from their schedules, there was a broader feeling that the media had ignored a darker side to the first Paralympic icon.

Never far from Controversy

The South African’s tumultuous romantic life has been a staple of local gossip pages but some incidents went largely unreported.

Shortly after the boating accident, Pistorius prohibited press photographers from taking pictures of an accident scene on the N4 highway in which a friend of his was involved.

Pistorius’ friend knocked over a pedestrian who died on the scene. Pistorius allegedly tried to keep photographers away from the scene.  Asked why they couldn’t take photos, the Blade Runner was quoted as saying:

“Because I am Oscar Pistorius.”

While no charges were pressed, police sources were aware of at least one other complaint of “abuse” from a young woman who had been dating the athlete.

In September 2009 Pistorius spent a night in custody at the Boschkop police office after allegedly assaulting a 19-year-old woman at a house party.  Casseby Taylor-Memory charged Pistorius with assault after he chased her from his Silver Lakes house.  A wooden log weighing 1.5kg allegedly landed on her leg after Pistorius shut a door at his house.
A month later the National Prosecuting Authority declined to prosecute Pistorius because they couldn’t prove he had intended to injure her.
After the incident, Pistorius instituted a lawsuit of R6.5 million against Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa for unlawful arrest and put in a R2.2 million claim of malicious intent against Taylor-Memory.

The Rap-Sheet Timeline

December 2007: IAAF bans Pistorius from all able-bodied athletics competitions, saying that he has an unfair advantage running with his trademark prosthetic blades.

February 2009: Pistorius suffers serious head and facial injuries in a boat accident on the Vaal River in Johannesburg. He remained in intensive care for five days.

February 2009: Police investigate a case of reckless and negligent driving after Pistorius’s boating accident. The case was not pursued by police.

September 2009: Pistorius detained by police after allegedly assaulting a woman who had attended a gathering at his Silver Woods home. The assault charge was dropped due to lack of evidence.

September 2012: Pistorius verbally attacks Brazilian Alan Oliveira after losing the T44 200m title to Oliveira in the 2012 Paralympics. Pistorius later apologised.

November 2012: TV producer Quinton Van der Burgh opens a case of intimidation against Pistorius, after Pistorius accused Van der Burgh of committing infidelity with his 18-year-old girlfriend.

November 2012: Pistorius reportedly threatens to break Marc Batchelor’s legs after he came to the defence of his friend, Van der Burgh.

November 2012: Samantha Taylor, Pistorius’s former girlfriend, accuses him of being a philanderer and “the ultimate player”.
