Oscar Pistorius, his girlfriends and his guns
He was voted as one of Time Magazines 100 most influential people in the world. She voted by another magazine as one of the 100 most beautiful women in the world. The pair had been called South Africa’s ‘golden couple’.
But the dark and complex life of ‘Blade Runner’ Oscar Pistorius emerged as he was charged with the Valentine’s Day murder of his model girlfriend.
High-Flying Adored
He was once adored by the public but lived a private life said to be filled with guns, fast cars and beautiful women. But now Oscar is being called a playboy who loves guns.
It was at London’s Paralympics when Oscar Pistorius’ mask first slipped. The South African sprinter, whose heroic effort to compete against able-bodied athletes had seen him take part in the Olympics the month before, responded to his first defeat in a 200m final by rounding on the man who had beaten him.
“We aren’t racing a fair race,” he complained.
Pistorius, the poster boy with the thousand-watt smile, accused Brazilian victor Alan Oliveira of cheating by using longer prosthetic blades than his own, and even implied that he may have been getting a boost by other means. Considering his own battles with those who have accused him of gaining an unfair advantage from his carbon-fibre prosthetics, it was a graceless reaction. It was also the first time the public at large caught a glimpse of what many closer observers had known for some time: that the Blade Runner had a furious temper. He has always had a temper – “The Blade Runner” just kept it well hidden.
September’s outburst at Oliveira tarnished his image and forced him to issue a public apology. But he seemed to have recovered his fairy-tale touch on the final day of the London Games, when he won the 400m and earned a standing ovation from the 80,000 crowd.
Tom Hanks started bidding for the film rights to the story of the young South African with the J-shaped prosthetics. The plot was compelling: the first double-amputee to compete against able-bodied athletes in an Olympic Games, who was listed in 2012 by Time magazine among the world’s 100 most-influential people.
Complex Love Life
However, back home in South Africa there were further signs of his combustible character when he hit the headlines in December after allegedly threatening to break the legs of businessman Quinton van der Burgh, whom he reportedly accused of an illicit tryst with a girl he had also been seeing.
According to newspaper reports, the sportsman approached South African football player Marc Batchelor in the VIP room of a horse racing track and verbally threatened him.
Perhaps due in part to his sudden financial and sporting success, Pistorius has a notoriously complex love life.
Prior to their split, he spent a year and a half dating Cape Town marketing student Samantha Taylor.
The Player
But even while he was with Miss Taylor, he was linked with numerous other women, including Russian model Anastassia Khozissova. Pistorius was first seen with Miss Steenkamp at an awards ceremony in South Africa in November. At the time, the FHM model said the pair were ‘just friends’.
But when it became clear that Pistorius and Steenkamp were in fact dating, the sportsman’s then ex Samantha Taylor said: ‘Oscar has such a way with women. She’s probably not the only one he’s got.”
Miss Taylor went on to tell South Africa’s City Press newspaper that ‘Oscar is certainly not what people think he is.’
